Unity in Glass has always considered our process to be a collaborative one between our clients and our glassmakers. With that in mind, we have always appreciated talking with our clients about our glass colors. Today we’d like to talk about our darkest color, Jet Black.

Our Jet Black, while gorgeous, is also a very dark shade. As such, the Black crystals can tend to have an outsized presence in the final glasswork. In the same way that Black cars get hotter in the summer sun, the Black crystals will absorb more energy and tend to spread out a bit more than the other colors. This will likely cause the black to be over emphasized in the final glasswork unless we take action!

I wanted to first share some images with you:

So above you will see two test hearts we have made, the first being a 50/50 Jet Black/Pure White heart, and the other being a heart made with 30% Black and 70% Pure White. I think you can really see what I’m trying to show in these two images. The heart on the left is definitely a bit more black than what we'd expect in an even 50/50 split. While you can’t make a bad mix by any means, we here at Unity in Glass want you to have as much knowledge and insight into what we know about glass as we can share. With that in mind, we might recommend to most clients to pull the Jet Black back just a bit in an effort to keep the final glasswork from being too dark.

While I have you here, I also wanted to show you another potential path to move forward when considering using our Jet Black, but are hesitant to get a piece that’s too dark.

Here we have two very similar hearts, except this time they are made from a mix of Tuxedo Grey and Pure White. I personally love the Tuxedo Grey! I think it can be a great substitute for the Jet Black, and one that we don’t have to adjust as much. So if you’re wanting that darker element, but need to have a more even portion, perhaps consider the Tuxedo Grey.

With that said, Thank you for reading through this. We love what we do every day, and truly couldn’t do it without clients like you! We would love to hear your thoughts on this or anything else glass related. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns to:Info@unityinglass.com
